Abstract

In this paper, we present and discuss the profile of geography teachers in Brazil. For the construction of the analysis, we used the microdata of the School Census of 2017, identifying the teachers with and without a degree in geography who taught classes of this discipline in elementary and secondary education in 2017. The data were tabulate from different variables and spatialized, allowing a better understanding of the geographical distribution of teachers in the national territory. The analysis shows that 51% of geography teachers do not have a full degree in the area, in violation of Brazilian educational legislation. In addition, it indicates that we are still far from achieving the training and work conditions necessary for the professionalization process of teaching in geography in the country. These data also alert to the risk of the current set of educational reforms, especially the reform of secondary education that can contribute to the legitimacy of the precariousness of training and teaching work in Brazil, with possible impacts on quality and the right to education the country.
