Abstract

The detection and mapping of current and past river features in the Amazon from remote sensing data are fundamental in discussions involving the formation and evolution of Amazonian drainage systems. The present study aimed to identify features that assist in the paleographic characterization of the Juruá river in the state of Acre, specifically from the identification of paleochannels and tectonic features using different remote sensing data and digital image processing techniques. The extraction of paleochannels as well as the mapping of holocene terraces and morphotectonic lineaments was performed using SRTM digital elevation models, whose analysis and data processing were performed in the Global Mapper 9.0 application. The results show that anomalous features throughout the drainage system are visibly observed through satellite images, such as: 90 ° angled direction changes and straight stretches along meandering courses.  Through the analysis of the SRTM images it was possible to highlight features that suggest a very expressive tributary on the left bank of the Juruá river and that some factor, possibly tectonic, has interrupted its course by reversing it in the opposite direction, thus leaving the channel.
