Coastal environments comprise some of the most productive ecosystems and densely populated in the world.Given the complexity inserted into the current environmental crisis, is there need for effective conservation measures of the coastal natural resources. In Brazil, the creation of Conservation Units (UC) is consolidated instrument in protection of natural and environmental resources. The study aims to support local sustainability through the creation of integral conservation unit in the southern coastal area of the state of Santa Catarina, using mapping and analysis of the relevant elements of the local landscape. The methodology made use of the GIS tool (Geographic Information System) to perform the mapping of landscape elements. The integration and analysis of landscape elements mapped resulted in 12.23km² area with potential for the creation of integral conservation unit that can promote local sustainability .
