What educational experiences were present in Popular Education in Recife – important in the configuration of the Municipal Education Network – beyond those related to the advent of the Popular Culture Movement (MCP) (1960-1964)? Popular Education in Recife, especially the Municipal Education Network, is commonly indicated as originating from the MCP, which occurred in Recife in the 1960-1964 years. We think that, in a non-linear and discontinuous configuration of space and time, other experiences were also important in constituting what we call today the Municipal Education Network of Recife. Among these experiences, occurred the first municipal schools (isolated and gathered schools), which began to function together with the government of the State of Pernambuco in 1895. The other experience was the Regional Center for Educational Research of Pernambuco, which was installed in 1957 in Recife, especially the idea of popular culture promoted there. They show us, among other things, that the formation of the Municipal Network of Recife goes beyond the experience of the MCP, as it is frequently indicated.
