Between narrating and educating

“Manguinhos On-line” as an educommunication praxis in the territory of Manguinhos, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Abstract

This text analyzes “Manguinhos On-line” as an educommunication experience situated in the territory of Manguinhos, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, understood not only as a communicative practice but also as an educational and political praxis. Drawing on the perspective of a resident-researcher, the study articulates contributions from popular education and community communication to argue that the production of information within the territory operates as a space for critical education, collective construction of meaning, and the strengthening of local protagonism. Thus, by engaging with scholars such as Cicilia Peruzzo, Paulo Freire, and Sueli Carneiro, the study demonstrates that communication, when rooted in lived experience, breaks with paternalistic logics and contributes to the appreciation of popular knowledge. At the same time, the initiative is situated within broader struggles for visibility and recognition in contexts marked by structural inequalities. Therefore, the study concludes that “Manguinhos On-line” functions as an educommunication initiative capable of articulating communication, territory, and social transformation.
