The “Crystal Liturgy” is the first movement of the Quartet to the End of Time, by Olivier Messiaen. It was written during World War II, when the composer was in prison, as a prisoner of war. I present in this paper a discussion around the “Crystal Liturgy”, considering the concepts of music – or piece – open and autopoiesis. I point out how, depending on the appreciative look, and how the piece transcends, it is possible to carry out different interpretations of the same piece. For a broader understanding, I contextualize the century in which the music was composed, I talk a little about the life of Olivier Messiaen, as well as the peculiarities of his way of creating. For, from a historical-musical knowledge and an aesthetic appreciation, we can reflect on music. It is a qualitative work, based on bibliographic research by scholars of History, History of Music and Musicology, mainly. Its first elaboration took place to fulfill the requirements of two disciplines of a Music course: Elements of Musical Construction; Aesthetics and Musical Structuring.
