This article is the result of theoretical-practical problems developed in the scope of the Vocalidade & Cena Research Group (CNPq since 2003) that involve relations of meaning production (Bakhtin 1997) between sounds and visualities of the scene. Its purpose is to continue and detail a perspective of the concept of sound design within the performing arts, initially presented in Lignelli (2014). To this end, we carry out the state-of-the-art of the notion of sound design in Portuguese and dialogue with Schafer (2011) regarding the concepts of fundamental sound, sound signal and mark. For methodological purposes, we divided the text into small sections with metaphorical subtitles permeated by examples of variables from a hypothetical scene coming from a coconut vendor. At the same time, we intertwined this with derivations of the analyzed concept aiming at the accessibility and applicability of the proposal.
