Abstract

The article discusses some tensions in the course of constructing the symbolic meaning and market value of the work of art, highlighting how certain agents position themselves in the intricate process of achieving economic success and legitimation. For that, it points to examples that constituted the notion of the autonomy of art in modernism until its heteronomy in contemporaneity.

Isabelle Graw é professora de História e Teoria da Arte na Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste (Städeschule), Frankfurt am Main, onde ela é co-fundadora do Instituto de Crítica de Arte. Ela é crítica de arte e co-fundadora da Revista Texte zur Kunst, em Berlin. Seu livro mais conhecido é High Price: arte entre o mercado e a cultura de celebridades.
