This article seeks to discuss the second chapter of the series of publications that make up the long-term project “A History of Misogyny” by Catalan artist and photographer Laia Abril, titled “On Rape: And Institutional Failure” (2022). The artist's narrative, constructed by combining image and text, demonstrates the prevalence of rape culture throughout history, while at the same time questioning the institutions that help maintain it. Our analysis is based on Dominique Baqué's theory of figurations of violence and Marta Gili's critical text, “Cartographies of Cruelty”, which is part of the artist's book, as well as issues of vulnerability, sexual and gender violence as pointed out by Judith Butler, Rita Segato and Mithu Sanyal.
