Abstract

The underrepresentation of females in STEM can be defined as the low percentage of women who specialize in the fields of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. As a result, professional positions in these areas are mainly occupied by men. This lack of interest emerges in elementary and secondary education, where students define their interests and areas of knowledge to focus on. The purpose of this quantitative pilot study is to understand the motivations of Chilean girls in secondary education, as well as the influential factors in their selection of courses associated with STEM. The instrument of data collection was a self-administered online survey.
