Abstract

The text addresses the conflicts raised by the circulation of the Anglo-Saxon word "queer" transferred to the Latin American and Spanish contexts. To this end, it is proposed to distinguish "queer" in its three aspects of meaning in Latin America: first, "queer" is understood as a term of difficult translation into Spanish, subject to a constant need of explanation. Secondly, queer as "queer theory", that is, as a set of postulates and debates that circulate from North to South. Third, queer as "queer politics," that is, as political positioning and as a set of tactics of resistance. The article delves into the problems caused by the loss of the "performative context" when enunciating queer in Latin America. At the same time, it describes the difference between "queer theory" and "teoría queer" as non-identical critical theoretical sets. Finally, the text proposes the creation of "differential genealogies" that express the localized forms of theoretical and political reflection of sexual dissidence in the Latin American context.
