Reading Poe’s transmedia suspense:
Functional narratology applied to multimodal literacy

In this article we present some considerations as to the applicability of the principles of functional narratology to the study of narratives in different media. First, we introduce a brief account of the origins and founding concepts of this approach in literary studies. Next, we apply its principles to an examination of the resources employed in the creation of suspense in the works of Edgar Allan Poe and Alfred Hitchcock, stressing how the analysis of narrative structures qualifies critical interpretive reading. As a result, we reinforce the potential of the functional narratological framework to support both literature teaching and practices in intermedial and multimodal literacy.
