Abstract

The objective of this paper is to present the relationship between urban development policies and the principles of sustainable mobility. More specifically, it seeks to clarify, in light of sustainable cities, configurative aspects of macro- and micromobility in medium-sized cities economically specialised in agribusiness. Beyond bibliographical reviews, the city of Barreiras, Bahia, was adopted as a reference in order to understand, through empirical analyses, the dynamics of intra-urban spatial production and the materialisation of circulation infrastructures and the environmental performance of mobility systems. The study is based on the assumption that the recent intensification of logistical flows associated with the technical-scientific modernisation of agriculture projects specific patterns of territorial expansion, functional restructuring, and mobility organisation onto these cities. Thus, the research relies on a historical-territorial reading of the urban formation process of Barreiras-BA, whose results indicate the persistence of road-oriented patterns and the fragility of collective and active, or non-motorised, mobility systems. Finally, the paper presents design-oriented contributions aimed at the requalification of structuring corridors, the reintegration of watercourses, and the enhancement of the historic centre, contributing to the formulation of urban design strategies oriented towards sustainable mobility in agribusiness cities.
