Author Guidelines

All articles submitted to the Brazilian Geographical Journal (BGJ) must adhere to the journal’s template. Before writing your manuscript, please download the template by clicking HERE.

Remember: Manuscripts must be submitted without author and co-author information. This information must be entered during the submission process in the "3. Contributors" section. The following fields are required: First name, last name, preferred public name, email address, country, ORCID iD, conflicts of interest, biographical summary (academic degrees—bachelor's, master's, and doctorate—and their respective institutions; current institution, followed by the city, state, and country where it is located; and contact email), and institution/affiliation (in full). If the article was co-authored, click on "Add Co-Author" and fill in all the required fields. Click on "Order" to organize the order in which the authors' names appear in the manuscript. Articles by the same author will not be published in the same year. Please note that under no circumstances will authors be added after the manuscript review process begins.

Only original articles that have not been previously published or submitted to another journal and that are submitted by Ph.D. or Master’s degree holders and graduate students will be accepted for publication in the BGJ. These articles must strictly follow the author guidelines.

The ORCID identifier is essential for avoiding ambiguity and name similarities among authors and individuals, and it must be entered in the designated field when adding all authors.

Scientific notes range from three to five pages, and articles range from six to thirty pages. Articles exceeding 30 pages require editorial approval after consultation.

Manuscripts may be submitted in English, Portuguese, French, or Spanish.

In all cases, an abstract must be included in 1) Portuguese, 2) English, 3) French, 4) Spanish,  along with the corresponding titles.

Authors are responsible for the information contained in their manuscripts.

Authors must disclose any conflicts of interest that arise during the submission process.

Submission Guidelines

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The journal publishes original scientific papers in fields such as Geography, Geology, Hydrology, Anthropology, Sociology, Urban Planning, History, Paleontology, and other related fields.
  • BGJ manuscripts must be submitted in Word format.
  • The manuscript text must follow the guidelines described in the “Guidelines for Authors” section and must be prepared using the template file available for download.

 Open Access Policies

This journal offers free and open access to its content, promoting greater democratization of knowledge.

Authors are not charged any fees for editorial services or the publication of their articles.

Peer Review Policies

BGJ uses a double-blind peer review system to ensure the anonymity of authors and reviewers throughout the review process. The entire editorial process takes place via Open Journal Systems (OJS).

After submission, manuscripts are initially reviewed by the journal’s editors. If they meet the requirements outlined in the "Guidelines for Authors" section, manuscripts enter the peer review process and are assigned to reviewers who have at least a Ph.D. and whose field of expertise aligns with the topic of the submitted work. Ideally, reviewers are members of the journal’s scientific advisory board, though they may also be selected as ad hoc reviewers from outside the board.

Reviewers evaluate the paper's structure, including the coherence of the text and discussion, the relevance of the data presented, and compliance with the journal’s guidelines. They also evaluate the writing, including spelling, grammar, cohesion, and clarity. Finally, they evaluate the theoretical, conceptual, and methodological aspects and recommend one of the following four options:

  1. Accept
  2. Accept with required revisions
  3. Resubmit for a second round of review
  4. Reject

If the decision is favorable and the reviewers indicate required revisions, authors will have 30 calendar days to submit a new version. The revised manuscript must be resubmitted with the corrections highlighted in yellow. Any revisions not adopted by the authors, in the event of disagreement with the review decision, must be clearly stated and justified in comments to the text editor using the “Review” menu in Microsoft Word.

After submitting the new version, the manuscript will undergo another review by the editors or a new round of evaluation by the responsible reviewers. The reviewers will assess whether the corrections have been addressed and implemented either partially or fully. The editorial process will not proceed in the following cases: 1) failure to meet the deadlines and guidelines specified by the journal, and 2) failure to make the indicated corrections (without presenting a rebuttal).
