Abstract

The interplay between extension, research, and postgraduate education poses a continuous challenge for higher education institutions dedicated to fulfilling their societal role by nurturing professionals who can address contemporary needs and foresee societal futures. This article explores the misconception within educational institutions that relegate research solely to postgraduate realms, highlighting its potential as a means for professional qualification beyond the technical-scientific dimension. It emphasizes the importance of integrating theoretical and practical aspects committed to societal needs. The journey towards integrating extension activities into the knowledge production space faces numerous challenges due to the entrenched structures within the Brazilian higher education culture, which perpetuates a fragmented education model rooted in dilettante scientism. However, this text showcases efforts by various national institutions to illustrate how this integration is crucial in developing higher education that seeks not only academic excellence but also social commitment. This approach represents an investment in the future, equipping the next generation of researchers to tackle society is complex and pressing challenges with wisdom, empathy, and practical solutions. Thus, integrating extension into research and postgraduate studies is not merely an ideal but a necessity for an impactful and relevant academy.
