The long-term care institution for the elderly, “Lar dos Velhinhos”

Abstract

In Brazil, there has been an increase in the proportion of elderly people in comparison to the general population, due to high rates of population growth, resulting from high fertility in the past, a drop of birth rates and an increase in longevity. Therefore, in view of the increase in the longevity of the elderly and the importance of a dignified and quality end of life, this experience report aimed to narrate the lessons learned and the challenges and obstacles faced when accompanying the institution “Lar dos Velhinhos”, located in Governador Valadares, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. This is a descriptive and exploratory study, based on the experiences lived by student members of the outreach project “Actions to Improve the Quality of Life of the Elderly”. Therefore, in view of the academic experience described, it was seen that the institution evaluated – “Lar dos Velhinhos” –, in addition to offering various services provided by professionals and caregivers, is committed to ensuring quality of life and physical and mental well-being for those institutionalized.
