Nursing in the promotion of women’s self-care
actions at a Family Health Center

This study aimed to present the interventions carried out by nursing interns, grounded in Orem’s self-care theory, with a focus on promoting women’s health. This experience report was developed at a Family Health Center in Sobral, Ceará, Brazil, between January and April 2024. The actions targeted 24 women aged 18 to 72 who participated in health promotion, physical exercise, and dance groups, as well as 28 women aged 20 to 60 enrolled in government-supported social programs. The application of Orem’s theory highlighted the importance of promoting participants’ autonomy, emphasizing the role of nursing in facilitating practices that foster health and well-being. By encouraging reflection on women’s health and the importance of preventive examinations, the theory not only empowered participants but also encouraged them to recognize their bodies’ warning signs and incorporate self-care practices into their daily routines. Thus, the application of the theory contributed to health education while strengthening women’s autonomy throughout their care journey and promoting an environment more conducive to self-care.
