Abstract

In this article, part of a broader reflection carried out by Sara Ahmed in her book "Queer Phenomenology" (2004), the British researcher and activist brings together the classics of phenomenology and queer studies to propose an articulation between the sexualization of spatial perception and the spatialization of sexuality that is productive for both fields of study. She takes the category of "orientation" and its uses to signify both awareness of existential situationality and the direction of desire to develop the argument that our ways of apprehending and signifying experience are intersected by the cisheteronorm that shapes worlds and bodies and interdicts horizons of possibility. Her argument for a queer phenomenology is based less on establishing a queer way of shaping existence as an object of analysis, and more on an inventive commitment to a multiplicity of lines of escape and deviation from familiar conventions of existence.

  • Sara Ahmed, Pesquisadora Independente

    Sara Ahmed é graduada em inglês, filosofia e história (1990) pela Universidade de Adelaide e doutora (1995) pelo Centre for Critical and Cultural Theory, na Universidade de Cardiff. Atuou na Universidade de Lancaster, no Reino Unido,  na área de Estudos de Mulheres, entre 1994 e 2004.  Entre 2005 e 2016, foi professora de Estudos Culturais e Raciais na Goldsmiths, Universidade de Londres, onde também dirigiu o Centro para a Pesquisa Feminista. Ao longo do processo de escrita deste livro, participou do grupo de trabalho que buscava enfrentar o assédio sexual no ambiente universitário britânico. Decepcionada com a cultura institucional que impedia a percepção e a solução do problema, e em solidariedade às vítimas, optou por se demitir de seu cargo na Goldsmiths. É autora de diversos livros e desde 2016 atua como pesquisadora independente, dando palestras e organizando seminários e workshops. Autora de  diversas obras, como  Queer Phenomenology: Orientations, Objects, Others. Durham: Duke University Press, 2006, Strange Encounters: Embodied Others in Post-coloniality. London: Routledge, 2000. e Differences That Matter: Feminist Theory and Postmodernism. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1998.
