This study examines the aesthetic and methodological transformations in local theater groups that create theatrical plays based on Maranhense folklore, as well as ethnic-racial and gender issues. The theoretical framework adopted includes concepts such as Oswald de Andrade's “anthropophagy”, Boaventura Santos's “abyssal thinking” and “epistemicide”, Elizabeth Spelman's “epistemic violence”, and Miranda Fricker's “epistemic injustice”, as well as Lîla Bisaux's “epistemic displacement”. The application of the concept of anthropophagy in the analysis of the contemporary theatrical scene in São Luís do Maranhão emphasizes the relevance of epistemic justice by recognizing the diversity of cultural knowledge and practices, thus avoiding the exclusion of marginalized voices and perspectives.
