The internet dominates a significant part of life in the 21st century, but it is increasingly automated, managed by artificial intelligence and financed by the commerce of users' personal data. Yet the functioning of many of these operations is not transparent for most of their users. Such technical ignorance hides the power relations in the digital realm and neutralizes the users’ agency in face of what happens to their data. Many of these operations have images as a crucial element, whether as a decoy, data source for surveillance or as “operational images” (FAROCKI, 2013), designed to execute commands and change the reality around them. This article discusses the role of digital images in these cybernetic power dynamics, emphasizing the consequences of the post-photographic image in the world around it and the emergence of a new “visual” culure.
