Music, Ludwig van Beethoven, Sonate opus 111.Abstract
This paper intends to explore interarts relations with emphasis on the corelations between literature and music. Firstly, we aspire to specifically demonstrate how literature contributes to the formation of an idea about Ludwig van Beethoven by means of countless representations in Thomas Mann’s Doktor Faustus, which will be the basis on which we will aim to demonstrate how literature is able to suggest musical interpretations. Regarding the former case, representations of Beethoven rendered by Kretzschmar (a figure in Doktor Faustus) contribute significantly to the formation of an impression of Beethoven. With respect to our latter intention, a well-structured discourse on Sonate opus 111 is presented, also by Kretzschmar. This sonate does not include a third movement, but it is not the only Sonate written by Beethoven with such characteristics. Discussions on the final part of this sonate highlight an important musical note. Based upon this discourse, there is an interpretative suggestion that has been followed by several pianists. On conclusion of this paper, we realize that the demonstrated relations do not occur unidirectionally. On the contrary: these relations are mutual.
