It is a historical-critical panorama of the censorship of the performing arts interpreted as political practice institutionalized by the Brazilian State, notably during the years of military dictatorship (1964-1985). The established cut summarizes the pre and post-coup events from 64 until the political opening, the promulgation of the 1988 Constitution with the supposed end of censorship, reaching the repression of shows and exhibitions in the national territory after 2016. The argument points to the possible authoritarian’s atavisms of the past and the political and social present in Brazil, conceiving censorship to the arts as being a practice provoked, among others, by conservative sectors of civil society. Finally, arrives a possible reading of the censorship as a historical phenomenon explaining the authoritarian elements that surround the arts in Brazil until this day. KEYWORDS Performing arts; Authoritarianism; Censorship; Freedom of expression; Brazilian theater.Downloads
