Abstract

This paper aims to study some requests for alms addressed in 1789 to D. Maria I, queen of Portugal. In the Early Modern Period, among the various ways that the poor had to get help, there was the request for alms, either from Misericórdias, from other brotherhoods, or from powerful individuals, namely members of the royal family. These requests were often answered positively, since aid to the poors was arto f the archetype of the good Christian. On the other hand, charity and assistance was complementary to other forms of salvific intercession, namely the celebration of masses and the institution of chapels.
