Abstract

Lawrence Venuti’s publications in the Translation Studies has gained attention from Brazilian researchers since the 1990s. His concepts and ideas have been used as theoretical-methodological support for discussions about translation to the point that his main concepts, foreignization and domestication, have been used as general lexical items given their popularity among researchers. The objective of this paper is to trace Venuti’s trajectory in Brazil while presenting the temporal and geoinstitutional contexts of his works and thoughts in the country, along with identifying his primary mediators. Through this case study, it examines the ongoing processes of international circulation and cultural transfer of knowledge. To achieve this, a quali-quantitative approach is adopted, relying on a bibliometric survey of theses and dissertations published in the CAPES Dissertations and Thesis Database. Results pointed to concentration of research in the South and Southeast regions of Brazil linked to graduate programs in Translation Studies; to the diversity of mediators in the academic domain; to the use of Venuti’s theoretical works published in the 1990s; and to the appropriation of his knowledge by Brazilian researchers in various fields.

Atualmente é Professora Associada II da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, Departamento de Línguas e Literaturas Estrangeiras Modernas, Professora permanente do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Estudos da Linguagem (PPgEL) da UFRN e Colaboradora do Programa de Pós-graduação em Letras da UFPB.
