This article deals with the preliminary stage of interpreter training. After a brief reference to the prerequisites and desirable qualities the budding interpreter should have, the focus will be teaching and learning strategies integrated with a formative approach to evaluation for the development of the first skills and basic knowledge that pave the way towards the acquisition of the competencies specific to the different interpreting modes a professional interpreter should master.
