The medium-sized cities, which are geographically detached from metropolitan areas, have emerged as privileged sites for urban and regional transformations, playing considerable influence on the Brazilian urban structure. This research endeavors to achieve the following primary objective: to estimate the daily commuting patterns for work in cities located outside metropolitan regions within Brazil. By analyzing these patterns, the aim is to identify their characteristics in medium-sized cities across the entirety of the Brazilian territory, ultimately classifying them, for a specific city, based on the ideal typologies posited by Pereira and Herrero (2009). The chosen methodology, adept at capturing the associated social processes, demonstrates sufficient robustness in categorizing commuting movements akin to those observed in metropolitan areas. However, the socioeconomic factors and underlying processes responsible for initiating these movements exhibit distinctive qualities in the medium-sized cities.
