GEOGRAPHY IN PRIME TIME: WHAT DOES THE PANTANAL TEACH US ABOUT THE CONCEPT OF PLACE?

Abstract

This article aims to identify the concept of place presented in the media as a practical way of learning geography. Often the knowledge presented by textbooks can prove to be meaningless and distant from reality, as it has shown for many years in the mnemonic past of geographic science. The proposal of renewed geography is for a more meaningful and practical learning, for which the phenomenological perspective is well applied. Initially important authors and their conceptualizations and collaborations about this perspective are highlighted, then the parallel between the teaching of geography and the concept of place is established and, finally, a brief and unpretentious analysis of scenes and contexts of the novel Pantanal, which can contribute to the meaningful learning of the place as a lived space. It is understood that the previously planned and well selected use of this audiovisual resource, whose scenes are widely publicized in free format both on television and on social networks, can be configured as a successful strategy in the teaching of geography.
