The contributions of Project Transform in the training of the rural youth of southern Minas Gerais, Brazil (2006-2013)

One of the main challenges to the countryside is to continue producing food and to prepare a new generation of farmers as the young abandon their properties. In this sense, the aim of this study was to know the reality in which the youth in Southern Minas Gerais live and analyze the results obtained from Project Transform, aimed at training young countryside residents to remain in the country and take over the family’s business. Project Transform was conducted by The Technical Assistance and Rural Extension Company (Emater-MG) during eight years, targeting young countryside residents aged between 16 and 29. The results showed that most young countryside participants from the project enjoy living in the countryside and intend to continue farming activities, although they have difficulties in accommodating work and studies and obtaining their own income. The most relevant demands from the youth are access to their own income, land, education in/ on the countryside and better living conditions. We present a few proposals and reflections to subsidize the establishment of new work strategies, highlighting the need for continuing the research on this theme. The study allowed us to understand the reality in which young countryside residents from Southern Minas Gerais live and showed that the project has made several contributions in stimulating the development and socioeconomic insertion of young countryside residents and their continuity in the countryside.
