Abstract

This study applied qualitative research methods to explore the experiences of psychotherapists and clients engaged in online psychodynamic therapy. All interviews were digitally recorded and transcribed; the study used thematic analysis to analyze the transcripts and extract themes. Convenience sampling was conducted to collect sufficiently detailed information. The online psychodynamic psychotherapy offer better accessibility and availability of psychotherapy to the clients, whereas the therapists need to reflect on several issues, including: underlying unconscious dynamics in changing of therapeutic setting, privacy issue about the setting of online psychotherapy, specific clinical content brought up by the settings of online psychotherapy which is differ from face-to-face psychotherapy (e. g. sense of distance created by online video chat), how to make clear setting of online psychotherapy, and other potential ethical and legal issues.  As online psychodynamic psychotherapy is on the rise globally after the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, therapists need to reflect the unconscious contents and implications of seeking and doing psychotherapy online, to achieve deeper understanding of the client and led to better clinical interaction between therapist and client. All these issues need to be considered and contemplate as crucial elements of the therapeutic encounters.
