This article discusses the essay "L'Iliade ou le poème de la force" by Simone Weil (1940-1941) as an example of the reception of Homer's Iliad. It starts from its central idea, which is then explored in a close reading of some of its passages, with emphasis on how Weil translates Homeric quotations. Although the essay has often been lauded or, even more commonly, criticized by Hellenists, it has rarely been the subject of a discussion focused on Homeric studies. The aim is to show that Weil’s composition, due to its radical, innovative and aesthetically captivating character, contributes to a dialog with the ancient poem. Perhaps no other author has argued as acutely as Weil that much more than a praise of martial heroism, Iliad is rather and paradoxically a document that reflects barbarity.
