The short story O Alienista [The Alienist] (1882) by Brazilian author Machado de Assis provides a vast framework of intermediatic interpretations as it has been adapted to the cinema, TV, comic books, literary books (in reduced and recreated versions), theater, and music. These varied adaptations have allowed the short story to circulate from the late 19th century to present. In fact, these have provided room for discussions around its canonical aspect and especially around its contributions to the aesthetic and political awareness of different readers. This article aims to analyze the process of this short story adaptation to a homonymous comic book by César Lobo (art) and Luiz Antônio de Aguiar (script). The approach is based on theoretical notions of intertextuality and intermediality, considering the complexity of image games in both literature and graphic narratives and their importance for reading the text and exploring graphic narratives in the classroom.
