The main objective of this study is to analyze how the graded reader of short story “The Fall of the House of Usher” reconfigures literary elements associated with the Gothic, considering how elements that are key in this tradition found in the original story have been preserved, simplified or eliminated in the target text. The results suggest that the graded reader manages to redefine the essential gothic elements despite its linguistic simplification. Some features of Poe’s gothic aesthetics extrapolate from the original story and spread through other components of the graded reader, such as illustrations and activities. The multimodality of the graded reader is, therefore, essential for the successful reconfiguration of some markedly literary elements of the source-text. We conclude that teachers of English as a Foreign Language can consider the use of graded readers as a means to foster literary literacy in their classes.
