Abstract

This article intends to show how humor functions as a discursive instrument and practice of resistance against the coup of April 1st, 1964 and the attempt to legitimize it in its early days. The coup aimed to portray itself as a legalist act, a defender of both democracy and individual rights and the holder of an alleged incorruptible “moral”, while, in practice, it silenced its opponents, committing acts of violence and disrespect for human rights, distorting laws, the Constitution and Institutions, and practicing and encouraging acts of corruption. The humoristic discourse was largely responsible for demystifying this speech through its consumption and reappropriation as an act of resistance by much of the Brazilian population, as we can see through its high circulation and reproducibility. In this article, we analyze both the humorous and the official discourse, most of which from the mainstream press.
