Maternity as a multissemiotic space of meaning making

In line with the proposal of the thematic issue of this journal – what does it mean to think and do research in another way, in the context of studies and teaching regarding the functioning of language and the processes of meaning making? – in this article, we seek to present an initial dialogue as an exercise of displacement of two researchers, one within an applied linguistic background and the other within a medical background in order to discuss the role of language and humanization in medical education. From the perspective of duetnography (NORRIS; SAWYER, 2012; BREAULT, 2016; MORGAN; MARTIN; MACIEL, 2019), we aim at discussing aspects of meaning construction based on social semiotic studies (BEZEMER; KRESS, 2016), in health literacies (RUDD; ANDERSON, 2006) and Literacies (LEMKE, 2006, among others). To this end, we revisit the discussion about meaning making in three scenarios - school, museum and hospital. To address the researchers' perceptions, the maternity hospital as a multi-semiotic space of meaning making was analysed, with emphasis on the surgery room and delivery room.
