O retrato indígena na literatura de viagem de Visconde de Taunay

Resumo

Os testemunhos dos viajantes, com bons comentários e críticas adequadas, colaboram para uma melhor e mais rica compreensão do passado. Porém, deve-se cuidar, para não cair na armadilha de aceitar as descrições e informações ali presentes como sendo o retrato fiel da realidade. Estas informações se constituem de representações, ou seja, de reinvenções de realidades, que foram produzidas a partir da visão de um sujeito, o viajante. Por outro lado, os relatos dos viajantes são capazes de atuar na mentalidade e na visão de mundo de uma sociedade, transformando assim o processo histórico. Desta forma, neste artigo propõe-se abordar como os indígenas foram retratados nas descrições\representações na literatura de viagem, tomando-se, como referência o viajante Alfred d'Escragnolle Taunay, mais conhecido como Visconde de Taunay em sua obra A retirada da Laguna3. ABSTRACT: The testimony of travelers, with good comments and appropriate criticisms, collaborate for a better and richer understanding of the past. However, it is important be careful not to be wrong about some tricky information accepting them as they were a faithful description of reality. This information takes part of a representation, in other words, it is a reinvention of a reality, which has been conceived from the view of a subject, the traveler. On the other hand, reports of travelers are able to act in the way of thinking and worldview of a society, transforming the historical scenario. Therefore, this article intends to address how the Indians were described in the descriptions \ representations in travel literature, having as reference the traveler Alfred d'Escragnolle Taunay, better known as Viscount Taunay in his work.
