Abstract

Maringá is a medium-sized city of the Central North Mesoregion of the State of Paraná, cut by the Tropic of Capricorn and, therefore, influenced by tropical and subtropical atmospheric systems that can promote significant atmospheric variability and, eventually, intense events of rain. Thus, the region's river water regimes are dependent and often impacted by both regional and global atmospheric dynamism. It was analyzed the rainfall history of this region and the influence of El Niño 2015/2016 on an episode of extreme rainfall registered in the period and that flooded the water collection area and significantly impacted the city's supply, generating chaos for the population. Extreme daily rainfall volumes were observed during this episode and historical trends of increasing these volumes for practically the entire hydrographic region upstream of the collection area. In this sense, the monitoring performed by the company responsible for the service may also have been insufficient or deficient.
