Before archaeological research expanded territorially, both quantitatively and qualitatively, while thinkers relied solely on logic and common sense, it was believed that the emergence of cities was due to the development of intensive agriculture and the growth and merging of rural villages. The 20th and 21st centuries reveal a new, more complex and varied reality for this process, with mining, security, hunting and gathering, religion, and other aspects taking the place previously attributed to agriculture. A literature review was used to locate the initial belief in agricultural dependence and how it transformed in light of new data. A literature review of recent research on the different causes of urbanization in the transition from the Paleolithic to the Neolithic period was also employed. The objective is to detail this transformation.
