Abstract

This article is a result of researches on urbanization in cities in the Baixada Santista, on the coast of the State of São Paulo. Specifically, we focused on the city of Cubatão, which has the particularity of being the only city not washed by the sea in the region. The main objective of this work is to analyze the structure of the city, highlighting the contexts of imposed socio-spatial segregation. As procedures, a survey and treatment of population data from the Census/IBGE - 2010 and quantitative data from educational, health and public squares, together with municipal and state institutions, were adopted. In general, in comparison with Damiani's (1985) analysis of Cubatão's slum process, the continuity of housing precariousness in Vila Esperança, Vila Natal and Vila dos Pescadores is notorious, which, in addition to the segregation given by income, the contents of gender, race and the absence of urban facilities are added.
