Abstract

The title of this text points to the frail balance point in which the historically determined theatrical phenomenon of commedia dell’arte may lie. I address this issue based on the dynamics of instability, characteristic of this unique experience in the Western theatre. This paper aims to contribute to updating commedia dell’arte studies in Brazil based on reflections that stem from the great period of revision of its studies that took place in Italy in the 1970’s and 1980’s. My approach is historical and historiographical and understands this phenomenon based on crucial axes, without which this experience rambles in time and space, becoming disfigured. However, grasping commedia dell’arte from this point of view is far from allowing concessions of any kind to factual determinisms; on the contrary, such perception allows for observing and analyzing how important this experience is to discussions on contemporary scene.
