Abstract

Historic register point to carver Manuel de Brito as the author of two retables in the Nossa Senhora do Pilar’s Mother Church in Ouro Preto. It is possible he was the artist who issued the invoice for the main retable of São Miguel Lisbon’s Church in 1723 and later on workedfor the São Francisco da Penitência Church in Rio de Janeiro. Thus, the main focus of this article is studying Brito’s work in the universe of Luso-Brazilian carving, the space and temporal delimitation of his work in Minas Gerais, as well as examining the retables of Pilar’s Mother Church, in whichhe is documented to have worked. Then, I intend to fill in the remaining gaps as we still lack further research on the relevant retables to measure Brito’s interventions and assess his protagonism in the spreading of king D. João V style in 18th centurycolonial carving, mainly in Minas.
