Abstract

Djeliya, a comic book created by Senegalese artist Juni Ba, visually explores the cadences of sound in the cultural traditions of West Africa. The work follows a djeli in a post-apocalyptic world, emphasizing the cultural significance of memory and ancestries. Rhythms and sounds are visualized constantly in its graphic structure, highlighting the importance of oral and musical practices in the construction and circulation of ancestral knowledge. Djeliya reimagines the legacy of the djeliw, reinventing the traditional storyteller for the world of contemporary comics.
