Media voices on the indigenous subject in Dourados-MS and the speaking of self

Abstract

In this article, we aim to present reflections on the representations by the local media regarding the surviving indigenous subjects in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, more specifically in the Dourados Indigenous Reserve. In addition to media statements, our research also relied on reports from these subjects, in order to detect in the rules of discursive formation possible power devices, which often affect both the way the subjectivation process of these people occurs and the way it appears in the media. Methodologically, we used clippings made in news and reports published in online newspapers of Dourados, interviews and bibliographic research. We employ as theoretical reference the Foucauldian Discursive Studies, commentators of Michel Foucault, Goffman for the approach on stigmas, among others. We conclude with this analysis that the media does not represent reality and ends up reinforcing the stigmas and stereotypes already so plastered in douradense society when it comes to indigenous subjects. Therefore, listening to them for the constitution of this analysis allowed us to get to know them and realize how they are subjectivized by the media and cultural gaze.
