Brazilian Women in politics addressed on Instagram profiles

This article analyzes the speech about women who active in the political sphere in Brazil on Instagram. Thus, the discursive question is: “How is the discourse about women in Brazilian politics developed in journalistic profile posts on Instagram?”. For this, we sought to analyze the posts published in three profiles present on Instagram, namely: O Antagonista, Folha de S. Paulo and a magazine Carta Capital. The theoretical-methodological line being used is the french Discourse Analysis (DA) based on the studies of the philosopher Michel Foucault, notably the notions of discourse and utterance. Therefore, we seek to investigate the ways in which the discourse about women in politics is revealed and constructed in journalistic vehicles of the different political approaches in Brazil, within the pre-electoral period of 2018. Through the analysis of the corpus, the following discursive regularities were observed: i) the woman linked to the man – the notion of family; ii) the invisibility of the woman in politics. Notably the low recurrence of posts that put women in focus, as the central point of the articles published on Instagram, as well as the constant construction of a bond between this woman and the male figure as she enters the political field.
