Discourses on curly hair in Brazil
between power and resistance, from transition to freedom

Black women are returning to hair straightening: this is the narrative that has appeared on several of the country’s main news portals between 2021 and 2024, reflecting what has come to be called “hair freedom” in Brazil. In this context, to shed light on the complexities underlying the narratives surrounding curly hair, this article examines the discursive shift between the movements of hair transition and hair freedom in contemporary Brazil, using theoretical assumptions from Foucaultian Discourse Studies, particularly the concepts of power/knowledge, resistance, and their multiple manifestations in discourse. Regarding the corpus, the article focuses on the analysis of statements found in prominent Brazilian magazines, revealing how the dynamics of knowledge and power produce and transform the discourses about curly hair in Brazil. The discussion explores the complexity of these narratives, highlighting the social and media pressures that continuously generate new forms of power and, consequently, new forms of resistance.
