Abstract

Considering the human dependence on ecosystem services, the tone of the environmental debate has turned to policies for the conservation of resources from natural capital and its services. Given the recent popularity of Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) policies, this paper is aimed at presenting some important points in the discussion about this type of policy. Besides the definition and purpose of such policy, the paper also highlighted some important aspects such as the question of the definition of agents participating in the market, the nature of the service(s) traded, the compensation value, as well as problems of institutional order.
