This article aims to describe the experience of two nursing students in assisting women in labor, developed in a reference maternity of Teresina, Piauí, Brazil, from April 2014 to February 2015, during the practices of the extension project called “Promoção do parto e nascimento saudável”. There were made contributions to the patients in terms of educational guidance in direct interventions and the use of non-pharmacological technologies for pain relief in addition to the assistance provided. The main objective was to transform the moment of birth, so it would be more physiological with the active participation of woman. The activities were enriching for the academic training of students and also boosted the critical thinking about improvements on the quality of care provided to women during the delivery process.
