Abstract

The outreach project “From green to ashes: life in the soil after the fires in Território dos Lagos”, linked to the State University of Amapá, was developed in the municipality of Amapá, state of Amapá, Brazil, aiming to raise awareness among elementary school students and family cattle farmers about the impacts of wildfires on soil macrofauna. The initiative integrated teaching, research, and outreach activities, aligned with Sustainable Development Goals 10 and 15 by promoting inclusion through access to scientific knowledge and encouraging the conservation of terrestrial ecosystems. The research was conducted in two pasture areas, one burned and one unburned, using the Tropical Soil Biology and Fertility Program method to collect macrofauna. Results showed a 51.8% reduction in organism abundance in the burned area and changes in the edaphic community composition, including the absence of earthworms and ants. These findings were presented through educational activities involving dialogic presentations, participatory dynamics, and direct observation of organisms using a stereoscopic magnifying glass. The project promoted environmental awareness, strengthened the relationship between science and the community, and encouraged critical reflection on the use of fire in pasture.
