Human rights and ethnic-racial diversity in the Amazon
the extension role of NEABI-Óbidos in basic education

This experience report presents the actions of the Center for Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous Studies (NEABI) at the Federal Institute of Pará (IFPA) – Óbidos Campus, carried out between 2021 and 2023, aimed at promoting human rights and ethnic-racial diversity in basic education. In response to the historical erasure of quilombola communities and the official narrative of the Amazonian city of Óbidos (Pará – PA), which centers on Portuguese colonial heritage, NEABI developed activities such as dialogue circles, educational workshops, lectures, and visits to traditional communities. The articulation with ARQMOB strengthened the dialogue between academic and ancestral knowledge, promoting inclusive pedagogical practices and critical reflections on structural racism. The results show progress in the appreciation of quilombola identities, student agency, and the strengthening of ties between IFPA and traditional communities. It is concluded that extensionist experiences like this, grounded in the principles of human rights, are essential for break historical silences and build a democratic, anti-racist, and socially just education.
