This article aims to analyze some excerpts from the radiophonic piece entitled Processos contra as bruxas, found in thebook A hora das crianças: narrativas radiofônicas, by Walter Benjamin. The book is a collection of 29 texts produced for radio programs in Berlin and Frankfurt from 1927 to 1932. In general terms, this radio piece problematizes how the conception of witch – this ancient figure of the collective imagination, generally described as evil, warty and child-eater, as in the character of Hansel and Gretel – became something fearful by the end of the Middle Ages. In other words, the witch character moved from fairy tales to the realm of law and power relations. To this end, this study is theoretically grounded on the reflections on the persecution of witches and the inquisition as proposed by Benjamin (2013; 2020), Federici (2018) and Pereira (2022).
