Contrasting the image of witches in different historical periods provides an understanding of how these figures characterize a society, especially through representations that are intended to be artistic. This article seeks to analyze the figure of character Circe in Homer’s Odyssey, an Ancient Greece work from ca. the 8th century BC, but especially in its reappearance in the Italian film Ulysses (1954) by Mario Camerini. In the contrast between the works, we find the image of a woman who escapes ideal standards, still in formation in Ancient Greece, her paideutic purpose within that society, and the already fixed image of a “witch”, in Italy in 1954, through the interpretation of actress Silvana Mangano. However, this use of the past does not only concern an adaptation of the Homeric narrative; on the contrary, it has specific purposes and reveals much of its own context.Downloads
